49 CFR PART 40
What makes a drug test “DOT”?
49 CFR Part 40 is the U.S. Department of Transportation regulation that sets the procedures for workplace drug and alcohol testing in DOT-regulated industries: how specimens are collected, how chain of custody is documented, and how results are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer before they are reported to the employer.
A DOT test follows these federal procedures and the federal 5-panel. It is not interchangeable with a non-DOT test.

IMPORTANT
Your employer determines whether your test is DOT-regulated.
Whether a test must be performed under DOT rules is decided by your employer under the agency rules that apply to your position. DMW does not determine DOT applicability. If you are not sure, ask your employer’s Designated Employer Representative (DER) before booking. If your employer sent you for a DOT test, choose Employer-requested DOT drug test below.
